Task Force Warns Lagos Unions Against Turning Public Spaces Into Trading Spots
The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement Unit, popularly known as the Task Force, has warned transport unions and other stakeholders against allocating pedestrian walkways, road setbacks and other public spaces to traders.
The chairman of the Task Force, Adetayo Akerele, gave the warning on Thursday after meeting with transport unions, market leaders, traders and other stakeholders in the Ikeja Division.
The meeting, held on Wednesday at the Lagos State Safety Arena, Oshodi, was aimed at strengthening cooperation with stakeholders on public safety, environmental compliance and adherence to existing laws.
Akerele said the Task Force would continue to enforce laws against the obstruction and illegal occupation of pedestrian walkways, road setbacks and other spaces designated for public use.
He expressed concern over reports that some union officials were allocating pedestrian walkways and other public spaces to petty traders, restricting movement and contributing to environmental nuisances.
The chairman urged transport unions, market leaders and other stakeholders to support government efforts to keep public spaces accessible and prevent illegal encroachment.
He also disclosed that the Task Force was working with relevant state agencies to address other environmental concerns, including poor waste management and open defecation.
“Enforcement alone cannot achieve a clean and safe environment. Sustained public safety and environmental sanitation require collective responsibility,” Akerele said.
The chairman further directed scrap dealers to ensure that all members of their associations were duly registered and had verifiable means of identification.
According to him, proper identification of scrap dealers would strengthen accountability and security while helping law enforcement agencies distinguish legitimate operators from criminal elements.
Akerele said the engagement formed part of the Task Force’s efforts to work with stakeholders to protect public spaces and infrastructure while promoting a cleaner and safer environment across Lagos.
