Jamb Strengthens HND Admissions Through Centralized Processing

A structural change in the administration of Higher National Diploma admissions takes effect from the current academic session. Polytechnics will no longer conduct the process in isolation. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board will assume responsibility for processing HND admissions on a nationwide basis, under a framework coordinated with the National Board for Technical Education.
The reform addresses long-standing weaknesses in the previous decentralised arrangement. By bringing HND admissions under a single, standardised platform, the system is expected to reduce the incidence of irregular or undocumented offers that have previously compromised the credibility of polytechnic qualifications. A further practical benefit lies in the prevention of downstream difficulties: graduates whose admissions were not properly captured have, in the past, encountered obstacles during National Youth Service Corps mobilisation. Centralised processing is designed to close that gap by creating a verifiable national record from the point of entry.
For the wider educational sector, the change introduces greater uniformity and transparency. A consistent admissions protocol across institutions supports more reliable data on enrolment, improves oversight, and reinforces public confidence in the value of the HND credential. Over time, these gains can strengthen the standing of polytechnic education within Nigeria’s tertiary landscape and reduce the administrative friction that has occasionally undermined both students and employers.
Effectiveness will depend on the quality of implementation—clear guidelines, adequate technical capacity, and seamless coordination between JAMB, NBTE and the polytechnics themselves. If these elements are secured, the centralised model has the potential to deliver a more orderly, accountable and student-centred admissions process, converting a procedural reform into a measurable improvement in the integrity and efficiency of technical higher education.
