Saint Janet’s Final Journey: Juju Music Mourns One of Its Own

The Nigerian Juju music community has bid farewell to veteran singer Iyun Janet Ajilore, popularly known as Saint Janet, as the music icon was laid to rest in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Saint Janet was buried at her residence on Wednesday, bringing to an end a series of funeral activities that drew family members, fellow musicians, friends and other mourners.
The burial was marked by emotional scenes as her children and loved ones gathered around her remains to pay their final respects to a woman whose career formed part of the rich history of Nigerian Juju music.
Before her final interment, the music community had gathered in Lagos to celebrate her life and contribution to the culture.
A candlelight service, Artists’ Night and Christian wake were held on Tuesday at the AIT/Faaji FM compound in Kola Alagbado, Lagos, bringing together people who knew and worked with the late singer.
For many in the Juju music circle, Saint Janet’s death represents the loss of another voice from a generation that helped keep traditional Nigerian popular music alive.
Her passing on August 1, 2026, after a brief undisclosed illness, sparked tributes from colleagues and admirers who remembered her career and contribution to the music scene.
As she takes her final rest in Abeokuta, Saint Janet leaves behind more than memories for her family. Her journey remains part of the story of Nigerian music and the generations of artistes who have used Juju to preserve culture, tell stories and entertain audiences.
