Call for Applications: Ashinaga Africa Initiative Scholarship 2026 – Fully Funded
Young Africans who have lost one or both parents and are seeking an opportunity to pursue higher education abroad can apply for the 2026 Ashinaga Africa Initiative (AAI).
This is a fully funded international scholarship and leadership programme.
Established in 2014, the AAI is designed to develop the next generation of African leaders by providing talented orphaned students with access to higher education, leadership training and a global network of mentors and professionals. Ashinaga expects selected scholars to return to sub-Saharan Africa after their studies and contribute to the development of their communities.
What the Scholarship Covers
Successful scholars receive comprehensive financial support for their university education abroad. The programme covers major costs including:
- University tuition fees
- Accommodation
- Travel expenses
- Other necessary education-related fees
- Leadership and academic support
The programme also provides scholars with opportunities for mentorship, internships, field research and networking with Ashinaga’s international community.
Who Can Apply?
The AAI is specifically targeted at academically strong young people who have lost one or both parents and demonstrate a commitment to making a positive contribution to Africa.
Applicants are generally required to:
- Be a citizen of an eligible sub-Saharan African country.
- Have lost one or both parents.
- Demonstrate strong academic performance.
- Have completed or be completing the required level of secondary education, depending on the application stream.
- Be committed to contributing to the development of sub-Saharan Africa after graduation.
- Be able to participate in Ashinaga’s preparatory and orientation activities.
- Have no dependants that would interfere with their studies.
Important Update for Nigerian Applicants
Prospective applicants from Nigeria and other Anglophone African countries should note that Ashinaga no longer accepts direct applications from Anglophone countries.
Since August 2024, Ashinaga has moved to a school-partnership model for Anglophone countries, working with selected high schools to identify eligible candidates. This means Nigerian applicants cannot submit an open individual application through the standard AAI application route.
Direct applications remain available for eligible applicants from Francophone and Lusophone African countries, subject to the programme’s requirements and deadlines.
AAI’s Leadership Focus
Beyond funding university education, the Ashinaga Africa Initiative places strong emphasis on leadership development. Scholars receive training intended to build the knowledge, skills and networks required to become compassionate change-makers.
Ashinaga says its ultimate goal is not simply to educate scholars but to equip them to drive change, innovation and development in sub-Saharan Africa when they return home.

Applications are completed online, and Ashinaga states that there is no application fee. Applicants should prepare the required academic, identification and proof-of-orphan-status documents before beginning the process.
