Nigerian Duo Light Up 200m Semis At The World U20 Athletics Championship

Team Nigeria’s impressive campaign at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene continued on Saturday as Success Oyibu and Miracle Ezechukwu delivered strong performances in the women’s 200m semifinals.

Oyibu produced a composed display to win her semifinal in 23.13 seconds, securing automatic qualification for the final. The Nigerian held off South Africa’s Rume Burger, who finished second in 23.18s, to advance as a heat winner and position herself among the medal contenders.

Miracle Ezechukwu also impressed, clocking a new personal best of 22.61 seconds to finish second in her semifinal. The time marks another significant step forward for the young sprinter in Eugene. Her place in the final, however, remains subject to official confirmation pending the final ranking of non-automatic qualifiers.

The results further highlight the emerging strength of Nigeria’s women’s sprint group. Oyibu has already booked her place in the championship final, while Ezechukwu is well placed to join her.

Ezechukwu has been one of the standout performers for Team Nigeria in Oregon. She earlier produced a powerful anchor leg that helped the mixed 4x100m relay team set a new Nigerian under-20 record of 41.91 seconds and qualify for the final.

With Jessica Oji having already made history by becoming Nigeria’s first athlete to win a global field event title at any level through her women’s shot put gold, the performances of Oyibu and Ezechukwu add further optimism about the country’s rising generation of talent.
