The head coach of South Africa’s national football team, Hugo Broos has thrown his future open and reconsiderd his previously stated plan to step down after the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following Bafana Bafana’s elimination in the Round of 32.
South Africa’s campaign came to an end with a 1-0 defeat to Canada. Despite the exit, Broos reflected positively on his five-year tenure, which included guiding the team to the World Cup and achieving notable milestones.
Speaking to the Press after the match, the 74-year-old Belgian reflected in his earlier statement of leaving at the end of the World Cup while still showing interest after the loss to co-host, Canada.
“It is not a good thing to take a decision in the heat of the moment, so I will not make any certain decision no. Yes, I said that I will leave after the World Cup, but I will have a discussion with SAFA and see what can be done in the future,” Broos said.
Broos had long signaled that this World Cup would mark his exit as the coach of Bafana Bafana.
However, his latest comments suggest openness to continued involvement potentially in his current role or another capacity pending talks with the federation.
The veteran coach expressed pride in the team’s achievements over the past five years, describing the journey as largely successful despite a challenging start.
SAFA is reportedly already exploring potential successors, with names like Pitso Mosimane mentioned in speculation, but no final decisions have been made.
