The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has announced that more than 418,500 tonnes of waste were evacuated across Lagos State in May 2026, representing an average daily evacuation of about 13,200 tonnes.

The agency disclosed this in its operational performance report for the month, highlighting ongoing efforts to improve waste collection, environmental sanitation and service delivery across the state.

Speaking on the report, LAWMA Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the agency remained committed to enhancing operational efficiency and strengthening waste management services in response to the demands of a rapidly growing population.

According to him, 442 licensed Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators were actively involved in waste collection across Lagos during the period under review.

Gbadegesin also revealed that 27 waste collection routes were undergoing review as part of efforts to optimise coverage, improve collection efficiency and address service gaps in various communities.

As part of its environmental sanitation drive, the agency cleared 173 waste blackspots across the state, including road medians, markets, bus stops and other public areas affected by indiscriminate refuse dumping.

The LAWMA boss further stated that the agency received 474 complaints and service requests from residents during the month, adding that measures were being taken to improve response times and overall customer service.

To support its operations, LAWMA currently deploys 77 compactor trucks, five skip trucks and 12 additional operational equipment units for waste evacuation and environmental sanitation activities across Lagos.

Gbadegesin noted that the agency’s ongoing service improvement initiatives include route restructuring, enhanced monitoring of PSP operators, infrastructure upgrades, deployment of additional equipment and stricter enforcement against environmental violations.

He urged residents to support government efforts by engaging only approved PSP operators, reporting service challenges through official channels and avoiding indiscriminate disposal of waste.

According to him, Lagos operates one of Africa’s largest urban waste management systems, making continuous investment, infrastructure development, enforcement and stakeholder collaboration essential for maintaining a clean and sustainable environment.

He reaffirmed LAWMA’s commitment to improving service delivery, keeping communities cleaner and building a more resilient waste management system for the state.
