Lagos Moves Against Indiscriminate Telecom Cable Deployment

The Lagos State Infrastructure Maintenance and Regulatory Agency (LASIMRA), in partnership with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), is set to begin a pilot cleanup exercise aimed at tackling the growing spread of abandoned and poorly managed telecommunications infrastructure across the state.

The exercise is scheduled to commence on Toyin Street, Ikeja, specifically around the Emina Crescent Junction axis, with technical teams expected to begin operations from 9:00 a.m.

Industry stakeholders, including Internet Service Providers, Mobile Network Operators and cable infrastructure companies, have been directed to participate actively in the operation.

Officials said the initiative is designed to address concerns over indiscriminate cable installations, dangling wires and damaged telecommunications equipment that have become common in several parts of Lagos.

Chairman of the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) Cleanup Committee, Segun Okuneye, said safety measures would be strictly enforced throughout the operation.

He urged all technical personnel participating in the exercise to wear proper safety gear and comply with operational guidelines to prevent accidents during the cleanup.

According to the organisers, the exercise is expected to improve environmental sanitation, reduce safety hazards linked to exposed cables and support more organised telecommunications infrastructure deployment across Lagos.

The committee also noted that the operation forms part of broader efforts to maintain the aesthetics of Lagos and promote a cleaner and more structured urban environment.

Speaking on behalf of the ATCON Cleanup Committee, Ajibola Olude called on residents and stakeholders to cooperate with officials handling the exercise.

He described the pilot scheme as an important step towards building a smarter, safer and more visually organised Lagos.
