Portable Advised to Get MRI Following Celebrity Boxing Bout
A Nigerian doctor based in Canada, Arinze Onwumelu, has advised popular singer Portable to undergo a medical examination following his recent celebrity boxing match with skit maker Carter Efe.
The bout, which took place over the weekend in Lagos, ended with Portable losing, drawing widespread attention online and sparking conversations among fans and public figures.
Reacting to the fight in a video shared on social media, Onwumelu—also known as Dr Zo—expressed concern about the level of impact Portable may have sustained during the match. He recommended that the singer undergo a brain scan, specifically a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), to rule out any internal injuries.
According to the doctor, some of the punches landed during the fight appeared to target sensitive areas of the head, raising the risk of conditions such as a subdural haematoma, which can be serious if left untreated.
He noted that celebrity boxing matches are typically meant for entertainment and not for causing harm, suggesting that the intensity of the fight may have gone beyond what is expected in such events.
Onwumelu also called on anyone close to the singer to ensure he gets proper medical attention, stressing the importance of early checks in situations involving repeated blows to the head.
Beyond the immediate concern, the doctor advised organisers of similar events to prioritise safety by making protective gear, such as headguards, compulsory for participants to reduce the risk of serious injuries.
Before the match, Portable had expressed confidence in his ability, citing his previous victories over rapper Speed Darlington and actor Charles Okocha in earlier celebrity boxing contests.
