Panic in Ikotun as Suspected Cultists Attack Wedding Celebration
Fear and confusion swept through Ikotun after gunmen suspected to be cultists attacked a post-wedding celebration, killing two people, including the bride’s father and a hypeman identified simply as Victor.
The incident happened on Saturday along Oviawe Street, off Governor’s Road, shortly after guests had gathered for an after-party following a wedding ceremony. What was meant to be a joyful celebration quickly turned tragic when armed men stormed the venue and began shooting.
Eyewitnesses said Victor was entertaining guests at the time when the attackers arrived and opened fire, causing panic as people scrambled for safety. In the chaos, the gunmen reportedly dragged him outside and assaulted him with weapons.
A resident who spoke anonymously said the situation escalated rapidly. According to the account, the bride’s father was shot while trying to intervene and plead with the attackers. Both men were said to have died on the spot.
The attack left the entire neighbourhood in shock, forcing residents and business owners to shut down and seek cover as the sound of gunfire spread fear across the area.
Some community members believe the violence may be linked to ongoing cult clashes in the area rather than the wedding itself. According to one resident, the attackers may have been targeting a rival or specific individual, but innocent people ended up paying the price.
A neighbour identified as Steve described Victor as a familiar face in the community, someone often seen around the street before the tragic incident.
As of the time of filing this report, the identities of the bride’s father and the attackers have not been officially confirmed.
Reacting to the incident, the spokesperson of the Lagos State Police Command said investigations are ongoing. She added that the case would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Panti for further action.
