There was a sense of pride and quiet excitement in Ikosi as residents, traditional leaders and community stakeholders gathered to witness what many described as a defining moment for their heritage — the groundbreaking ceremony for a new Onikosi Palace.

For many in attendance, the project is more than bricks and mortar. It is a symbol of identity, history and a renewed connection to their roots in a rapidly changing urban landscape.

Leading the ceremony, the Mayoress of Ikosi-Isheri Local Council Development Area, Princess Samiat Abolanle Bada, spoke not just as a government official but as a stakeholder in the cultural future of the community. She described Ikosi as an ancient town whose story deserves to be preserved and celebrated.

According to her, the new palace represents a bridge between generations — a place where tradition will continue to live, even as the city around it evolves.

She emphasised that traditional institutions remain central to community life, serving as anchors of unity, identity and continuity, especially at a time when modernization often threatens to erode cultural values.

Residents who attended the event shared similar sentiments, noting that the palace would restore a sense of pride and belonging, particularly for younger generations who may feel disconnected from their heritage.

The Mayoress also acknowledged the role of the Lagos State Government under Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, stating that support for grassroots development continues to make projects like this possible.

She extended commendation to Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, linking the initiative to broader national efforts aimed at strengthening communities and promoting inclusive development.

Beyond the speeches and formalities, the gathering reflected a shared hope — that the palace, once completed, will stand not just as a structure, but as a living reminder of who the people of Ikosi are and where they come from.

For the people of Ikosi-Isheri, the day was not just about a groundbreaking. It was about reclaiming a story, preserving a legacy and setting the foundation for generations yet to come.
