Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, has declared that Nigeria remains determined to host a major international sporting event, setting its eyes on the 2034 Commonwealth Games after missing out on the 2030 edition.

Despite the disappointment of the failed 2030 bid, Dikko insisted that the country’s ambition is stronger than ever.

He revealed that Nigeria’s bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games received high ratings from evaluators, which has boosted confidence that the country now meets international hosting standards.

Buoyed by this feedback, the National Sports Commission has already begun preliminary discussions for a potential bid to host the 2034 Commonwealth Games.

Dikko disclosed that Nigeria is also exploring bids for other major competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), as part of a comprehensive long-term strategy to upgrade sports infrastructure and elevate the nation’s profile in global sports.

According to Dikko, the goal of hosting these events goes far beyond prestige. It is a deliberate move to accelerate infrastructure development, create jobs, improve facilities, and establish Nigeria as a powerhouse in African and international sports.

“We are not stopping. It will help us grow. That gives us confidence. We are thinking bigger,” Dikko said.

The new approach marks a clear shift from short-term setbacks to sustained ambition. Instead of dwelling on the missed opportunity for 2030, the NSC is leveraging the experience gained to strengthen future bids and position Nigeria more competitively on the world stage.

As the country continues to invest in its sports sector, successfully hosting major tournaments could become a game-changer for national development.
