Popular Nigerian comedian Seyi Law has apologised following widespread criticism over his recent remarks on Nigeria’s security situation.
The entertainer, who has previously expressed support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, had stated during an appearance on the Honest Bunch podcast that the country is safer now than it was a decade ago. The comment triggered strong reactions online, with many Nigerians disputing the claim and accusing him of downplaying ongoing security challenges, including kidnappings and violent attacks.
In a video shared on Instagram, Seyi Law acknowledged that his statement was insensitive and offered an unreserved apology.
“My fellow Nigerians, I owe you this and more. I’m sincerely sorry for such an insensitive statement that I made on the Honest Bunch podcast. I’m not someone who would be too proud or very insensitive to apologise when he makes mistakes,” he said.
Reflecting further, he admitted that the comment failed to consider the experiences of victims and families affected by insecurity.
“I had looked at that statement and I think it is quite insensitive to those who have had issues with kidnapping, relatives being killed and all that. I want to sincerely and unreservedly tender an apology to those whom that statement has hurt. I believe that statement is very insensitive,” he added.
The comedian also called on President Tinubu to prioritise the safety of Nigerians and intensify efforts to address the country’s security concerns.
