Charly Boy: ‘99% of Nigerian Pastors Are Running Churches as Business’

Maverick entertainer Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has criticised Nigerian Christian clerics, alleging that most are more focused on profit than speaking out against the country’s challenges.
Speaking on a recent episode of the KAA Truths podcast, the self-styled “Area Fada” accused many pastors of remaining silent amid Nigeria’s economic hardship and security concerns.
According to him, a large number of clerics have prioritised financial gain over moral responsibility, and in some cases work alongside corrupt politicians to exploit ordinary citizens.
“All the pastors I know of in Nigeria, 99 per cent of them are useless. It is just a business that they are running,” he said during the interview.
Charly Boy also distanced himself from mainstream public opinion, stating that although he lives in Nigeria, he does not share what he described as the dominant mindset.
“I may live in Nigeria but Nigeria does not live in me. I don’t believe like you. I don’t want to think like you people. I’m not in the same class with you people. I come from a different space and time,” he added.
His remarks are the latest in a series of outspoken commentaries by the veteran singer and activist, who is known for his criticism of political and religious institutions.
