Woman Arraigned Over N2.8M Scam

The Iba Magistrates’ Court has held a woman for prosecution over an alledged love swindle to the tune of N2,800,000.

Victoria Effiong, the 25-year-old accused fashion designer, was said to have obtained under false pretences from one Dominic Asuquo, the complainant, according to the Police Prosecutor, Inspector Chinedu Njoku.

Njoku said that Effiong, who is facing charges on three counts charge bordering on breach of peace, cheating and obtaining by false pretence, promised to marry Asuquo.

Njoku said that the accused failed to follow through. He added: “While the defendant was dating Asuquo, she obtained an iPhone worth N240,000, different clothes, a wristwatch, shoes and bags valued at N350,000.

“The complainant also gave the defendant a cash sum of N810,000, N4000, daily feeding money for seven months worth N868,000.

“Effiong also withdrew N300,000 from Asuquo’s ATM account for shopping.”

The Prosecutor continued: “The situation escalated when Asuquo discovered that Effiong was planning to marry another man despite having introduced him earlier to her parents, who were aware of their relationship.”

Effiong while pleading not guilty to the accusations said, He [Asuquo] knew I was dating someone else.

“I received the iPhone from him truly but I already told him to stop sending me money because I was uncomfortable with it.”

Njoku said that the offences committed are punishable under Sections 168, (1d), 322, and 314 (2) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015.

The court granted the suspect bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

To perfect the bail terms, the defendant must provide blood relations as the sureties who must show proof of tax payment to the Lagos State Government, and have their address verified.

The case was adjourned till November 28.
