Who Killed Chika Ibe-Nigerian Group Demands Probe
Nigerian Group Demands Independent Probe into Death of Chika Ibe in South Africa
The Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa (NICASA) has called for an independent investigation into the death of a Nigerian national, Chika Ibe, following a police operation in Bellville, Cape Town.
According to NICASA, Ibe died during an encounter with members of the South African Police Service (SAPS). The association alleged that he was severely assaulted and tortured while in police custody, claims it says resulted in his death.
NICASA urged the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) to carry out a transparent and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure that any officer found culpable is brought to justice.
“We are calling for an immediate, transparent, and independent investigation by IPID into this incident,” a representative of the association said.
The South African Police Service confirmed that an inquiry into the incident is underway but has not substantiated the allegations of assault or torture made by NICASA.
The incident has heightened concerns within South Africa’s foreign national community, with advocacy groups calling for accountability, transparency, and a swift conclusion to the investigation.
Authorities are expected to release further details as the investigation progresses.
