Nigeria, Denmark Boost Economic Ties with Focus on Trade and Investment
Nigeria and Denmark have taken steps to strengthen their long-standing partnership, with both nations reaffirming their commitment to expanding cooperation in trade, investment and sustainable development to unlock fresh economic opportunities.
The renewed push for closer ties came during a meeting in Abuja between Nigeria’s Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, and the Danish Ambassador to Nigeria, Jens Ole Bach Hansen. Discussions centred on broadening bilateral collaboration and identifying new areas that could drive economic growth and mutual prosperity.
Speaking during the meeting, Bagudu described Denmark as a valued development partner and stressed Nigeria’s readiness to build a stronger and more dynamic relationship. He noted that deeper engagement between the two countries would support inclusive economic growth while creating opportunities for businesses and investors.
The minister highlighted several sectors where both nations could collaborate more closely, including agriculture, livestock production, the digital economy, the blue economy, education, judicial reforms, peace and security, and knowledge exchange. He also called for joint efforts in addressing global issues such as irregular migration.
Bagudu pointed to the Federal Government’s ongoing economic reforms under President Bola Tinubu, saying they are aimed at creating a more transparent and investor-friendly business environment. According to him, Nigeria has attracted about $7 billion in infrastructure investments over the past two years, reflecting growing confidence in the country’s reform agenda.
Ambassador Hansen reaffirmed Denmark’s commitment to expanding its partnership with Nigeria, describing the relationship as one anchored on shared values and common economic interests. He disclosed that Denmark plans to increase its diplomatic footprint in Nigeria by expanding its embassy and deploying more officials to strengthen cooperation in areas such as politics, defence, agriculture and commerce.
The envoy also revealed that Danish investments in Nigeria are expected to grow through the Investment Fund for Developing Countries, while new opportunities are being explored in education, maritime development, the creative economy and digital innovation.
As both countries seek to deepen bilateral engagement, they agreed to pursue a more structured framework for political and economic cooperation, with the goal of boosting trade, attracting investments and promoting sustainable development for the benefit of both nations.
