By Saheed Afolabi

Nigeria U17 women’s national team coach, Hakeem Busari, has urged the Flamingos to convert their scoring opportunities as they prepare to face Mexico in Thursday’s Round of 16 clash at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.
Nigerian will be seeking a place in the quarter-finals when they confront their Mexican counterparts on October 29, with Busari revealed the importance of mental strength and clinical finishing in the knockout encounter.
Having progressed from the group stage, the Flamingos can no longer afford mistakes that could end their campaign, prompting the coach to remind his players to make the most of their chances.
“We know there is no second chance, and we let the players know why it is important to take their opportunities once and for all,” Busari said.
He acknowledged Mexico’s quality but expressed confidence that his team could rise to the challenge, noting that both sides deserve respect at this stage of the competition.
“Mexico are a very good side. I believe they respect us, and we equally have respect for them because every team at this particular stage is a contender for the trophy.”
Busari also disclosed that preparations have focused on ensuring the players approach the encounter with the right mentality and readiness for the demands of knockout football.
“We have just talked to the players about high mentality, a sense of readiness and a good approach to the game.”
The Flamingos will hope to translate their preparations into a strong performance against Mexico as they pursue a quarter-final berth and continue their quest for the tournament title.
