The Lagos State House of Assembly has beseeched the executive arm of the state to look into the incident of a 12-year-old student, Amina Alege, who suffered an eye injury after she was allegely tear-gassed by the Police.
Alege, a student of Adam Yakubu Memorial High School, Agege, was on Friday, February 9, tear-gassed after the police intervened in an embroilment between two schools in Agege.
The House members called on the state’s Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi, and the ministry to offer necessary support to the young girl who is billed for surgery.
Informing the House about the incident, member, Hon. Abiodun Orekoya, representing Shomolu Constituecy 01, disclosed that he received the news through a human rights organization, further stating that the parents of the victim have been borrowing money to pay for her treatment.
Orekoya, who also doubles as the Chairman, House Committee on Sports and Youth Development told the House that the student is receiving treament at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH.
The Lawmaker urged the House members to call on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to offer support to the parents and help save the victim’s life before the situation worsens.
In like terms, Hon.Kehinde Joseph, member, representing Alimosho Constituecy 02, emphasized that since the student attended a government-owned school, it was necessary for the governor to step in. He further requested that the House examine the incident to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Deputy Speaker Meranda, who presided over the plenary in absence of the Speaker, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa called for the summoning of the management of both schools involved in the clash to ascertain what led to it.
They are expected to report back within one week.
