Suspect Arrested For Vandalising Concrete Safety Barrier On Ikorodu Road

Lagos State authorities have arrested a man suspected of deliberately damaging a concrete barrier along Ikorodu Road, an act officials say endangered both public infrastructure and road safety.
The arrest occurred at Kosofe Bus Stop, Mile 12, during a monitoring and enforcement operation conducted by the state. Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed that the suspect was apprehended while removing iron rods, cables, steel reinforcements and other structural components from the barrier.
The barrier had been installed to prevent pedestrians from crossing the expressway at unauthorised points. Officials noted that the removal of these reinforcing materials could undermine the structure’s stability and effectiveness, thereby increasing risks to road users and pedestrians.
“The suspect was found deliberately removing iron rods, cables, steel reinforcements, and other critical structural components that contribute to the stability and effectiveness of the concrete barrier,” Wahab stated. He added that the individual has been taken into custody and will be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The commissioner described the action as part of the Lagos State Government’s ongoing commitment to safeguarding public infrastructure and ensuring the safety of residents and motorists. He reiterated the administration’s zero-tolerance approach to the vandalism of facilities designed to protect lives along major road corridors.
The incident draws attention to the persistent challenge of maintaining critical safety infrastructure on one of the city’s busiest routes, where enforcement remains essential to preserving both structural integrity and public safety.
