Veteran Nollywood actress Lola Idije has cautioned against pressuring women to marry early, saying some may not get married until they are 40 or 50 and should not be judged for raising children without husbands.

The actress made the remarks during an appearance on the Africanlist Podcast, where she defended women who shoulder the responsibility of raising their children alone.

“Not everybody will have a husband to help them raise their children. So women have to carry their burden alone. Not all of them choose that life,” she said.

Lola argued that some women become single mothers because of circumstances beyond their control, insisting that not having a husband does not make a woman irresponsible.

She also questioned the pressure placed on young women to marry, asking how anyone could be certain that marrying at 20 would not lead them to choose the wrong partner.

“But if you start pressuring them at 20, how can you be sure that they won’t marry the wrong person?” she said.

The actress further spoke about motherhood, noting that having children could influence a woman’s disposition.

“When women start giving birth, they become softer,” she said.
