Sanwo-Olu Begins Distribution of Grants, Work Tools to Small Business Owners
The Lagos State Government has launched the first phase of the 2026 Micro Enterprise Support Initiative (MESI), a programme designed to empower small business owners with financial assistance and work tools to boost their businesses and reduce poverty.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, officially flagged off the programme on Tuesday.
The first batch of beneficiaries includes traders, fashion designers, food vendors, technicians, barbers and artisans selected through a verification process conducted across all local government areas of the state.
The Micro Enterprise Support Initiative, implemented by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA), was introduced in 2019 to tackle poverty at the grassroots and promote inclusive economic growth.
The programme targets economically disadvantaged women, indigent youths and graduates of government skills acquisition centres by providing entrepreneurship training, start-up capital and work tools to help them establish or expand their businesses.
Speaking at the launch, Hamzat said the initiative reflects the Sanwo-Olu administration’s commitment to creating economic opportunities for vulnerable residents while strengthening micro and small businesses, which remain critical to Lagos State’s economy.
According to the state government, the programme is expected to improve self-reliance, create employment opportunities and increase household incomes by helping beneficiaries build sustainable sources of livelihood.
