Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has congratulated the Flamingos following their historic triumph at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, describing the team’s achievement as another confirmation of Nigeria’s sporting excellence.

The Flamingos made history after defeating Japan 2-1 in the final to win their first-ever title in the competition, bringing an end to Nigeria’s long wait for a global trophy at the U-17 women’s level.

Tinubu praised the team’s resilience and determination, noting that they recovered from a difficult start to win six consecutive matches on their way to lifting the trophy.

“Your path to victory was not an easy one. You shrugged off your shaky start and took on the world, winning six matches in a row on your way to the golden trophy, confirming what others already know that Nigerians are world beaters,” she said.

The First Lady also expressed pride in the team’s achievement, noting that their triumph had elevated Nigeria and Africa’s standing in women’s football globally.

“I am particularly proud of this inspiring feat which has now placed the country, and indeed Africa, at the pinnacle of women football across the world. Through your team spirit, dedication, and hard work, Nigeria again is the toast of the world,” Tinubu added.

The Flamingos’ victory represents a landmark moment for Nigerian women’s football, with the team becoming the first African nation to win the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

Their historic campaign in Morocco further underlined Nigeria’s growing influence in women’s football and provided another reason for national celebration.
