Omi Eko Project: Transforming Lagos Waterways for Sustainable Transportation

The Omi Eko project is an ambitious initiative by the Lagos State Government, through the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), aiming to revolutionize the city’s inland waterways into a world-class transportation network.
It was scheduled to commence in 2025 and conclude in 2030, the project seeks to stimulate urban and economic development while promoting eco-friendly transportation solutions.
With a total investment of EUR 410 million, the project’s financing is primarily supported by the Global Gateway Initiative, a collaboration between the French Development Agency (AFD), the European Union (EU), and the European Investment Bank (EIB).
The Lagos State government contributes EUR 40 million in counterpart funding, with an additional EUR 10 million from the private sector.
The Omi Eko project focuses on harnessing the potential of Lagos’ extensive waterways to alleviate heavy road traffic and provide alternative transportation modes.
By integrating ferry services with existing road and rail networks, the initiative seeks to create a seamless multimodal transportation system.
Project components include dredging and navigation of 15 ferry routes, deployment of 78+ large-capacity electric ferries, and construction or rehabilitation of 25 ferry terminals with charging stations.
Ferry terminals will feature cutting-edge facilities, including parking spaces, waiting areas, digital payment systems, and safety equipment.
In addition, the project utilizes electric ferries with low-emission engines to minimize water and air pollution.
Public-Private Partnership (PPP) is a crucial aspect of the Omi Eko Project, as it aims to stimulate economic growth for local businesses, artisans, and entrepreneurs in waterfront communities and tourism hubs.
The project creates opportunities for collaboration between the public and private sectors, ultimately benefiting Lagos’ residents and visitors.
Safety is paramount, with LASWA implementing strict safety protocols and launching public education campaigns to ensure that all passengers, boat operators, and stakeholders adhere to safety guidelines.
The Omi Eko Project also prioritizes convenience by adopting a smart ticketing system using Cowry Card payment technology, reducing waiting times for passengers.
