Odi-Olowo Chairman’s Cup Season 6: Jakande Hails Youth, Unity And Growing Reach

The Chairman of Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Dr. Seyi Jakande, has described the Odi-Olowo Chairman’s Cup (OCC) as far more than a football tournament, calling it a vital platform for youth development, community cohesion and talent discovery as Season 6 gets underway.
Over 50 clubs will participate in the sixth edition across five different age categories including women’s football which have attracted noticeable support from the community.
Speaking during the official draws of the Season Six edition, Jakande said the competition has evolved into a celebration of the values that strengthen local communities.
“This tournament has, over the years, become more than just a football competition. It is a celebration of youth, talent, unity, and community spirit. Through the Chairman’s Cup, we have discovered promising footballers, strengthened bonds among our wards and communities, and promoted healthy competition that reflects the true spirit of sportsmanship,” he said.
Looking ahead to the new season, the chairman expressed confidence that the competition would deliver high-quality football and lasting memories for players and supporters alike.
“Season 6 promises to be even more exciting. The passion of our young athletes, the energy of our supporters, and the commitment of our organizers will ensure thrilling football action and unforgettable moments. The draw marks the beginning of the journey to glory for our participating teams, and I urge every player to see this as an opportunity not just to win, but to showcase discipline, teamwork, and resilience.”
He also paid tribute to the tournament’s long-standing partner for helping sustain the event and open doors for young players.
“I must commend Cardinal Sport Promotion Limited for their steadfast support and partnership. Their sponsorship has been instrumental in sustaining this competition and in giving our youths a platform to shine.”
Jakande further highlighted the expanding footprint of the Chairman’s Cup, which now attracts sides from beyond the LCDA and even outside Lagos during the long school holidays.
“The Chairman’s Cup has grown into a truly inclusive tournament, hosting football clubs from across Lagos and beyond during the long holidays. For example, Future Stars FC of Ibafo and Lakeside Queens of Ikenne will be competing this season, while Ijamido Queens of Ota unfortunately missed out on a slot.”
The OCC has become one of the notable grassroots football competitions in Lagos, providing productive engagement for young people during the holiday period while promoting sportsmanship, discipline and community bonding.
