…As Blue Line Rail Hits 3.5 Million Passengers

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to introduce a Lagos State-issued driver’s licence in partnership with the Federal Government as part of efforts to improve road safety, strengthen traffic management and ease the licensing process for motorists across the state.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed this on Monday during the 2025 ministerial press briefing held at Alausa, Ikeja.

According to the commissioner, the proposed initiative will provide motorists with the option of obtaining either the existing federal driver’s licence or the newly proposed Lagos State driver’s licence once the scheme becomes operational.

Osiyemi explained that the move is aimed at improving compliance with traffic regulations, enhancing road safety standards and reducing delays often experienced in the current application and renewal process for driver’s licences.

He stated that the state government was working closely with relevant federal authorities to ensure a smooth implementation process that would benefit residents and road users across Lagos.

Providing updates on licensing activities within the review period, the commissioner revealed that a total of 56,876 driver’s licences were processed in collaboration with the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency and the Federal Road Safety Corps.

According to him, the figure comprises 27,067 fresh applications and 29,810 renewals, while an additional 1,158 international driver permits were issued during the same period.

Speaking further on transportation infrastructure, Osiyemi disclosed that the first phase of the Lagos Blue Line Rail transported approximately 3.5 million passengers in 2025, reflecting growing acceptance of the rail system among commuters.

He added that the second phase of the Blue Line extension, stretching from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko, is expected to be completed and become fully operational by the first quarter of 2027.

On the Lagos Red Line Rail project, the commissioner said the state government had acquired 24 additional train coaches arranged into three sets of eight-coach trains to improve passenger movement and operational efficiency along the corridor.

Osiyemi also revealed that work had intensified on the proposed 68-kilometre Lagos Green Line Rail project, which is designed to connect Marina to the Lekki Free Trade Zone through Victoria Island, Lekki, Ajah and Sangotedo.

He noted that the rail expansion projects form part of the broader transportation master plan of the Lagos State Government aimed at reducing travel time, easing traffic congestion and improving mobility within Africa’s most populous city.

The commissioner reaffirmed the commitment of the administration of Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu to building an integrated transport network capable of supporting the state’s growing population and economic activities.
