Lagos Roads: 69 Dead, Over 240 Injured in Q1
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has disclosed that 69 persons lost their lives in road accidents across the state in the first quarter of 2026.
The agency also recorded 246 injuries of varying severity within the same period, highlighting ongoing safety concerns on Lagos roads.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare Oki, made this known during an interview in Lagos, noting that the agency responded to and cleared over 600 accident scenes between January and March.
He further revealed that more than 900 traffic violations involving trucks and articulated vehicles were addressed, while the agency conducted about 4,900 physical enforcement operations across the state.
In addition, LASTMA recorded 17,942 traffic offences through its technology driven enforcement system, including the use of Traffic Management Solution devices.
Bakare Oki reiterated the agency’s zero tolerance stance on traffic violations, stating that impounded vehicles are promptly prosecuted at the Lagos State Mobile Court.
He noted that the agency has strengthened its operations through improved response systems, including the overhaul and strategic deployment of traffic equipment and recovery vehicles to reduce travel time for commuters.
On capacity development, he said LASTMA has launched a structured training programme aimed at enhancing the efficiency of its workforce.
According to him, over 1,000 personnel are scheduled to undergo both internal and external training programmes throughout 2026, with consultants engaged to support specialised capacity building.
He added that the initiative is part of efforts to improve service delivery and ensure more effective traffic management across Lagos State.
