Lagos Police Recover Stolen MacBook, Four Hard Drives in Oriental Hotel Wedding Theft
The Lagos State Police Command has reportedly recovered items stolen during a wedding ceremony at the Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, following public attention generated by the circulation of the suspect’s photograph on social media.
The stolen items, which include a MacBook Pro M1 laptop and four external hard drives containing video footage from five weddings, belong to Eman Pictures, a photography and cinematography outfit engaged to cover wedding events.
The incident occurred on October 31, 2026, when a bag containing the equipment was allegedly taken from the bride’s room at the hotel.
The photographer’s public appeal offered a reward of ₦500,000 for credible information that could lead to the identification of the individual and recovery of the missing property through the appropriate authorities.
The appeal was accompanied by CCTV footage obtained from the hotel, which reportedly showed the suspect entering the premises, moving around the facility, accessing the bride’s room and subsequently leaving with the bag.
The footage went viral on social media, attracting widespread reactions and prompting several people to share information about alleged similar incidents involving the same individual.
Suspect Identified as ‘Lion of Lagos’
The individual was subsequently identified by social media users as Timothy Mbachu, popularly known by the nickname ‘Lion of Lagos’. His photograph reportedly resurfaced in connection with earlier allegations of theft at public events in Lagos.
Several social media users also came forward with accounts of alleged previous encounters with the individual, claiming that they had lost valuable equipment at social and corporate events.
One user reportedly recalled an incident dating back about 10 years, when equipment was allegedly stolen at an event at the MUSON Centre in Lagos.
Another photographer alleged that two laptops were stolen during an event at the Oriental Hotel in August 2023. According to the account, the individual allegedly posed as a photographer, carrying a camera around his neck to blend in with other event professionals.
These accounts have generated renewed concerns about the security of personal belongings and professional equipment at major event venues.
Stolen Equipment Recovered, but Files Formatted
In a major breakthrough, the photographer announced on Thursday, November 5, that all the stolen belongings had been recovered.
However, she disclosed that the suspect had formatted the four external hard drives, raising concerns about the fate of the wedding photographs and videos stored on them.
Despite the setback, she expressed optimism that the files could still be retrieved through data recovery procedures.
In her appreciation message, she thanked Nigerians who shared the CCTV footage, circulated her appeal, provided useful information and supported the efforts to recover the missing property.
The recovery brought relief to the photographer and the five couples whose wedding memories were stored on the devices.
Where Is the Suspect?
Despite reports identifying the alleged suspect as Timothy Mbachu, details of his arrest or whereabouts have not been independently established in the available reports.
The Lagos State Police Command has also not been publicly quoted confirming his arrest or providing an official account of the recovery operation.
The allegations linking him to previous theft incidents remain accounts shared by members of the public and have not been established through a court judgment.
The incident has nevertheless renewed calls for improved security at hotels and major event centres, particularly during weddings and corporate functions where photographers, videographers and other service providers routinely move around with expensive equipment.
For the affected photographer, the recovery of the laptop and hard drives represents an important breakthrough. The next priority is retrieving the formatted files and ensuring that the five couples eventually receive the wedding photographs and videos they paid to have documented.
