The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Tijani, has warned officers of the command against brutality, extortion, unlawful arrests and detention, saying personnel found guilty of misconduct will face disciplinary action.

Tijani gave the warning on Thursday during a general lecture for officers and men of the command at the POWA Hall in GRA, Ikeja. The meeting was held in line with a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu.

The commissioner stressed that officers must carry out their duties professionally, respect human rights and obey the law, warning that misconduct could weaken public trust in the police.

He also held senior officers responsible for the behaviour of personnel under their supervision, noting that accountability must extend through the command structure.

Tijani specifically cautioned tactical teams against intimidation, incivility, brutality and other unethical practices. He directed officers to treat members of the public with respect and exercise restraint while carrying out their duties.

The commissioner also warned personnel to comply with the Nigeria Police Force’s social media policy. He said inappropriate online conduct capable of damaging the image of the police would attract sanctions, including consequences for responsible supervisors.

On the fight against cultism, Tijani urged officers to intensify efforts to tackle the problem while ensuring that arrests were lawful and followed due process.

He further prohibited arrest by proxy and arrests without legal justification. Officers were also directed to protect the lives and welfare of suspects in custody and ensure they were treated humanely.

With the 2027 general elections approaching, the police chief urged personnel to remain neutral and professional. He said officers must monitor electioneering campaigns and provide adequate security to maintain peace and public order.

Tijani also called on officers to stay informed about local and international developments, emerging security threats and other issues that could affect their work.

He said the police could only earn public confidence through integrity, impartial enforcement of the law and respect for the rights of every citizen.
