Lagos State Police Command operatives have arrested two young men suspected of cult-related activities and recovered a locally fabricated pistol in the Ajah area of the state.

The raid, carried out in the early hours of Tuesday in a residential neighbourhood off the Lekki-Epe Expressway, followed days of intelligence gathering. According to police sources, the suspects, both in their mid-twenties, were found inside a rented apartment where the crude single-barrel pistol had been carefully hidden.

A senior officer familiar with the operation said the pair had been under watch for weeks over alleged links to a confraternity cell known for recruiting and intimidating residents in parts of Ajah and neighbouring communities. “We received consistent information about their movements and decided to move when the opportunity presented itself,” the officer explained. “The weapon recovered is a typical local fabrication — dangerous in the wrong hands and clearly intended for criminal use.”

The pistol has been taken to the police armoury for ballistic examination, while the two suspects are currently being held at a divisional headquarters for further interrogation. Investigators say they are probing possible connections to recent night-time disturbances and threats reported by residents in the area.

For many living in Ajah, the arrest comes as a modest but welcome development. Cult-related clashes and the circulation of improvised firearms have remained a persistent worry for traders, landlords and families in the fast-growing suburb. One resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, captured the prevailing mood: “We hear gunshots from time to time and people live in fear, especially at night. If this means the police are paying closer attention, then it is a step in the right direction.”

Police authorities have appealed to members of the public to continue volunteering useful information, stressing that community cooperation remains essential in dismantling the networks that arm and protect such groups. The suspects are expected to be charged in court in the coming days as investigations continue.
