Lagos Pensioners Begin Warning Protest Over 16-Year Arrears

LAGOS — Pensioners under the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Contributory Pension Scheme (NUPCPS), Lagos State Council, will on Monday, August 24, 2026, commence a warning protest across the 20 local government areas and 37 local council development areas of the state over unpaid pension arrears and wage awards allegedly spanning 16 years.

The protesters said the action followed the expiration of a 19-day ultimatum issued to the Lagos State Government to address their outstanding demands.
Chairman of the NUPCPS, Lagos State Council, Comrade Michael Omisande, said the Monday protest was intended to draw attention to what he described as the government’s insensitivity to the plight of pensioners.

According to him, the warning protest would be followed by a larger demonstration on August 31, when more than 50,000 pensioners are expected to converge on the Lagos State Government Secretariat in Alausa.

Omisande said the pensioners would remain at the seat of government until their demands were addressed.

He urged the government to urgently intervene and settle the outstanding pension arrears and wage awards to prevent further escalation of the dispute.

The statement was issued by Abiodun Akinbusuyi, General Secretary, NUPCPS, Lagos State Council.
