The Lagos State Government has intensified its housing development drive, announcing that more than 10,600 housing units have been delivered across the state within the last seven years as authorities move to ease pressure caused by rapid urban growth.

Commissioner for Housing, Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, disclosed the figures during a ministerial briefing commemorating the third anniversary of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term, describing the achievements as part of a broader strategy to close Lagos’ widening housing gap.

According to the commissioner, a total of 10,623 homes have so far been completed through a combination of direct government intervention and partnerships with private investors. Of the total number, 4,414 units were funded directly by the state government, while 6,209 units emerged through Public-Private Partnership (PPP) initiatives designed to boost affordable housing delivery.

The government says the momentum is far from slowing down, with plans already underway to increase the total number of completed units to over 14,000 by the first quarter of 2027.

Several large-scale residential projects are currently progressing across different parts of the state, including Egan-Igando, Sangotedo, Epe, Ibeshe, and Ipaja, where new estates are expected to add significantly to Lagos’ housing inventory in the coming months.

Despite the progress, officials admit the state still faces enormous housing pressure driven by population growth, urban migration, and rising demand for affordable accommodation. Lagos is estimated to have a housing deficit exceeding 3.3 million units, making it one of the biggest housing challenges in Africa.

Among the administration’s recent milestones is the completion of the Akinsanya Sunny Ajose Estate Phase 1, which delivered 420 apartments, alongside another 233 units under the Abraham Adesanya Housing Estate Joint Venture Scheme.

Akinderu-Fatai further revealed that the Sanwo-Olu administration has completed 23 housing estates spread across the five divisions of Lagos since 2019, while reaffirming the government’s commitment to improving mortgage accessibility, encouraging real estate investment, and making home ownership more attainable for residents.

With multiple projects nearing completion, the state government says its long-term vision remains focused on building sustainable communities and reducing the growing demand for decent and affordable housing in Nigeria’s commercial capital.
