Former Midwife Intern Donates Essential Monitoring Equipment To Randle General Hospital

A former midwife student has returned to Randle General Hospital with a significant gift for its maternity services, donating a new cardiotocography (CTG) machine and several fetal Dopplers to the Maternal and Child Centre in Gbaja, Surulere.
Mariam Afinowi completed an elective placement at the hospital last year as a third-year student midwife. The experience, she said, left a lasting impression and ultimately prompted her to raise funds for equipment that would strengthen fetal monitoring in the unit where she trained.
Medical Director and Chief Executive Officer Dr Lateefat Omolara Agbaje welcomed the donation, describing it as a notable demonstration of professional commitment and gratitude. The equipment, she explained, will help the maternity team assess fetal well-being more effectively and support timely clinical decisions for mothers and babies.
“It is encouraging to see a former student return not only as a qualified midwife but as a professional ready to give back to the institution that formed part of her training,” Dr Agbaje said. She added that such individual acts of generosity complement the work of healthcare staff and contribute to the continuous improvement of services.
Afinowi expressed appreciation for the commitment and compassion shown by the hospital’s maternity team during her placement. Fetal monitoring, she noted, plays a vital role in identifying when a baby may need additional support, enabling clinicians to act promptly. She has also offered to help train relevant staff on the use of the new equipment if required, to ensure it is used confidently and to full capacity.
Randle General Hospital has acknowledged the donation as both a personal and professional milestone for Afinowi, and expressed the hope that her example will encourage others to support the advancement of maternal and newborn care.
