Family Speaks on Tope Osoba’s Death, Says Cause Not Yet Disclosed
The family of late Nollywood actress Tope Osoba has dismissed widespread reports linking her death to cancer, describing the claims circulating on social media and some blogs as false, speculative and unauthorised.
In a statement shared on the actress’ official Instagram page on Thursday, the family said it was deeply saddened by the spread of misinformation surrounding the circumstances of her death, stressing that no official cause of death had been released.
The actress was reported to have died on Tuesday evening after she reportedly spoke with some colleagues on the phone and shared the message “Ogo Tuntun,” meaning “New Glory,” on her WhatsApp status shortly before her passing.
Following news of her death, several online reports claimed she died from breast cancer, referencing her public appeal for financial assistance nearly two years ago to undergo surgery and treatment.
However, the family firmly rejected the reports, insisting that Tope Osoba did not die of cancer and urging the public to refrain from spreading unverified information.
“We are deeply saddened by the spread of false and unverified reports concerning the passing of our beloved,” the statement read.
“At this difficult time, we wish to categorically state that the numerous claims circulating on social media and various blogs regarding the circumstances surrounding her death are false, speculative and entirely unauthorised.”
The family appealed to the public and media organisations to respect their privacy and avoid sharing unconfirmed information, noting that the speculation had added to the grief of those mourning the actress.
It added that any official information regarding the circumstances surrounding Tope Osoba’s death would be communicated through her verified social media page when appropriate.
The clarification comes amid widespread tributes from colleagues, fans and members of the Nigerian film industry, who have continued to mourn the actress while awaiting further details from her family.
