Commonwealth Games 2026: Onome Didih Seals Nigeria’s Fifth Gold With Triple Games Record

Nigeria’s strong showing at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games continued on Monday as weightlifter Onome Didih delivered the country’s fifth gold medal with a dominant, record-breaking performance in the women’s 53kg category.

Didih produced a near-flawless display, rewriting the Commonwealth Games record books three times on her way to the top of the podium. She opened with a 93kg snatch to set a new Games mark, then powered 113kg in the clean and jerk for a second record before sealing victory with a combined total of 206kg — also a new Commonwealth Games record.

The Nigerian finished well clear of the field. India’s Gyaneshwari Yadav took silver with 199kg, while Canada’s Rebeka Groulx claimed bronze on 178kg.

Didih’s triumph adds positive impact to Nigeria’s already impressive weightlifting campaign in Glasgow and keeps Team Nigeria firmly on course for a memorable Games.
