Calvin Bassey Excited To Captain Fulham

Nigeria defender, Calvin Bassey is elated to have been named the new captain of Fulham this season.

The club led by Spanish gaffer, Álvaro Arbeloa named Bassey the new captain following his leadership characteristics.

Bassey says it’s a privilege to be named Craven Cottage captain and describes it as an unbelievable decision which has further buttress his influence in the club.

The defender stated leading comes naturally to defenders and credited Arbeloa for changing his status at the club.

“It’s a privilege. Being able to captain this club is unbelievable,” he said.

“Going into my fourth season, I know the boys and get on with everyone. So I just be myself and try to help everyone. Leading comes naturally because of the position I play, being able to see everything and having to communicate as a centre-half.”

The 26 year old acknowledged he has been lucky to play many games for the club but he made it known that the captaincy hasn’t changed anything from him.

“I’ve been around these boys for so long and been fortunate enough to have played so many games, so it didn’t really change anything. Of course, it’s a huge privilege, and thank you to the manager for giving it to me, but I don’t think it’s changed me.”

“Nah, not really, that’s not me! I’m more chill. Before the game, I’m just happy, smiling as always. I just want everyone to go in with good energy.”

Fresh from being named captain of the club, The Nigerian led Fulham to take a point off Liverpool at the Anfield Stadium on Saturday.

Bassey had an impressive showing against Liverpool with four clearance, won three tackles, completed 23 out of 28 passes and won all his ground duels in the game.

Fulham will clash against West Ham in their next game at the League Cup third round on Tuesday, September 15.
