AFCON 2027 Race: Ilenikhena Blown Away With Quality Of Players In Super Eagles Ahead Of Madagascar’s Clash

Nigeria forward George Ilenikhena says the Super Eagles have created a strong family atmosphere in camp as they begin their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) the qualifying campaign against Madagascar in Uyo on Friday.

Ilenikhena, who arrived in camp on Tuesday, said he was immediately impressed by the unity within the squad and the warm reception from his teammates ahead of the opening Group L game.

“The team spirit is very good. I just arrived yesterday (Tuesday), and I can see that everyone is together like a big family, and that’s very good,” Ilenikhena said.

The 20-year-old expressed his pride at being part of the Super Eagles which he describe as a great achievement to his career.

“It is an honour to be here. I am proud and happy to be part of this big national team, and for me, it’s a big deal.”

Ilenikhena acknowledged the experience and quality within the squad, and he’s excited at the opportunity to train and compete alongside established Super Eagles players.

“I am just 20 years old, and I am here with big and already accomplished players.”

Reminiscing his first appearance at the international level, the forward is determined to make the most of any opportunity handed to him by head coach, Éric Chelle.

“I am very excited. I will give my best, like always. I will give my best when the coach puts me on the pitch and help the team in the best way I can.”

The youngster’s focus is now on Friday’s encounter in Uyo where Nigeria will look to make a winning start to their qualification campaign.

“We are ready and excited to play this first game, and we are preparing in the best way to win on Friday.”

Nigeria will be aiming to secure the three points and establish an early foothold in their quest to qualify for the 2027 AFCON.
