The Female Football Academies Proprietors (FEFAP) has congratulated Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, following their historic triumph at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.
The Flamingos made history on Saturday after defeating Japan 2-1 in the final to claim their maiden title in the competition, becoming the first African nation to win the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
Goals from Awawu Bashiru and Oluebube Umejiaku secured the memorable victory for Nigeria, while Fuki Ito scored Japan’s consolation goal in the 80th minute.
FEFAP described the achievement as a landmark moment for Nigerian women’s football, noting that the triumph represents a significant reward for the development of young female footballers across the country.
The association, which plays an important role in grassroots women’s football development through its network of academies and the WAFA League, also celebrated the players and technical crew for their determination, discipline and collective effort throughout the competition.
Nigeria’s triumph was particularly remarkable considering that the Flamingos recovered from a narrow opening-match defeat to Poland to win six consecutive matches on their way to lifting the trophy.
The victory also marked the first time an African women’s national team had won a FIFA World Cup title at any level, further underlining the continent’s growing presence in international women’s football.
