Nigerian actress and disc jockey Dorcas Shola Fapson, popularly known as Ms. DSF, has sparked debate after arguing that financially struggling people should reconsider having children if they cannot afford to cater for them.

The actress shared her views during a recent episode of the In My Opinion podcast, where she said having children without the financial means to support them could be unfair to both the parents and the children.

“Poor people shouldn’t have kids. I don’t think it is fair to the children. It is not fair to the family. It is not fair to you,” she said.

Ms. DSF cited the experience of a cousin with five children, claiming that the woman had struggled financially since the birth of her first child and frequently sought assistance with school fees and feeding.

“Why do you have five? Every week, she is requesting for financial assistance for school fees, feeding. It is so unfair. Why have kids when you don’t have means to sustain them? It is not fair,” she added.

The actress disclosed that she was raised in a humble home but had resolved not to bring children into similar financial circumstances.

She urged people planning to become parents to consider their financial capacity and ensure they can provide for their children’s needs before starting a family.

Her comments have brought renewed attention to conversations about financial readiness for parenthood, the cost of raising children and the responsibilities that come with starting a family.
