Lagos is steadily advancing plans to deliver a modern, purpose-built children’s hospital that aims to elevate paediatric care standards in the state and the wider region.

The new Massey Children’s Hospital, a flagship project of the Lagos State Government under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is designed as a 150-bed specialist facility on Lagos Island. The development features an eight-floor main hospital building, a ten-floor multi-level car park with 397 vehicle spaces (including dedicated ambulance bays), and a rooftop helipad.

Once completed, the hospital will house specialised paediatric wards, outpatient clinics, surgical suites, intensive care units (including neonatal), emergency services and other clinical functions, all planned around the needs of children and their families. Landscaped outdoor areas and patient-friendly interiors are also part of the design to create a supportive healing environment.

Health officials describe the project as a response to the growing demand for specialised child healthcare in a rapidly expanding megacity. The existing Massey Street Children’s Hospital has long served generations of young patients but had outgrown its capacity. The new facility is expected to function as a major referral centre, reducing the need for families to travel abroad for advanced treatment while also supporting medical training, research and the development of local paediatric expertise.

Construction progress continues, with the main hospital building reported at around 60 per cent completion and the car park significantly further advanced in recent updates. State Health Commissioner Professor Akin Abayomi has been overseeing efforts to move the project from physical completion toward full operational readiness, emphasising that the goal is a fully functional specialist hospital rather than simply a finished building.

The initiative reflects a broader commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure in Lagos and bringing high-quality paediatric services closer to home for families across the state and neighbouring regions.
