Obalende Underbridge Gets Modern Makeover Through Lagos, MTN Partnership
By Sherif Salau
The long-neglected Obalende underbridge is undergoing a significant transformation into a modern transport hub, thanks to a partnership between the Lagos State Government and telecommunications giant MTN Nigeria.
Known as the Y’ELLO Bus Park, the redevelopment aims to convert what was once a chaotic and degraded space into an organised, secure and community-focused facility. The project, fully funded by MTN as part of its corporate social responsibility, covers the underbridge, loop and adjoining areas.
Key features include a regulated transport terminal to streamline bus operations, more than 60 public toilet facilities, food and beverage kiosks, a recycling drop-off station, and a dedicated road camp for Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) sweepers and security agencies. Solar-powered lighting and CCTV cameras are being installed to improve night-time visibility, reduce blind spots and enhance security. A biodigester system will manage wastewater, while tree planting and solar panels support environmental sustainability and energy efficiency.
Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has described the initiative as a move to reclaim public space and create a functional, healthy and aesthetically pleasing environment for commuters and residents. The site was formally handed over to MTN in April 2026, with construction progressing in phases.
When completed, the upgraded hub is expected to ease congestion, improve sanitation, discourage illegal activities and offer a safer, more orderly experience for the thousands who pass through Obalende daily. The project forms part of broader efforts to modernise transport infrastructure and enhance the quality of public spaces across Lagos.
