LA Olympics Qualifier: Alozie, Kanu Goals Lift Falcons Over Comoros
By Saheed Afolabi
Nigeria started their LA Olympics campaign with an emphatic two goal win against Comoros at the Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne on Friday night.
Two second half goals from Michelle Alozie and Uchenna Kanu sealed the win for Super Falcons against a tough Comoros team.
Nigeria dominated proceedings in the game with series of chances which went off the goal post.
The best chance of the first half fell to skipper, Rasheedat Ajibade who hit the goal post from close range and this drew thunderous exclamation from the spectators.
The first 45 minutes ended in a stalemate as both sides couldn’t find the back of the net.
Two minutes after the start of the second half, Kanu sent in a cross into the box and Gift Monday nod it down to Alozie who blasted the ball into the net from close range to give Nigeria the lead in the 47th minute.
The Super Falcons curtailed the attacking threat of Comoros thereby creating a balance for the midfield to explore their creativity.
Jennifer Echegini corner kick was met with a swinging header from Kanu to double Nigeria’s lead in the 59th minute.
Efforts from the Falcons to add to their tally proved abortive as they take a 2-0 away win advantage into the second leg that will come up on Tuesday, October 13 at the Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne.
