The Lagos State Government has announced the temporary closure of Freedom Park on Lagos Island to allow for scheduled maintenance, clean-up, fumigation and facility upgrade works.
The closure commenced on Monday, October 5, and will last until Sunday, October 11, 2026.
The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture said the temporary shutdown was necessary to facilitate ongoing rehabilitation and improvement works aimed at enhancing visitors’ experience and preserving the historic facility.
In a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mrs Bopo Oyekan-Ismaila, the government said the works would cover comprehensive cleaning, fumigation, beautification, routine maintenance and upgrades to facilities and services within the park.
“As part of our ongoing maintenance programme, Freedom Park Lagos will be temporarily closed from Monday, 5th October, to Sunday, 11th October 2026, to allow for comprehensive clean-up, fumigation and related maintenance works,” the statement said.
The ministry said the improvement works were also aimed at providing greater comfort, convenience and value for members and visitors to the park.
It assured the public that Freedom Park would reopen immediately after the maintenance exercise, with normal activities expected to resume.
The ministry appealed to members of the public and visitors for patience and understanding during the temporary closure, saying the intervention was intended to make the facility a better destination for recreation, cultural activities, networking and community engagement.
The state government also expressed regret over any inconvenience the closure might cause and thanked members and visitors for their continued support.
