Iheanacho Insists Turkish League Is No Push Over
By Saheed Afolabi
Nigeria forward, Kelechi Iheanacho has defended players that chose to play in Turkey and insisted the League isn’t a push over compared to other leagues in Europe.
Iheanacho, who has been involved with Nigeria’s national teams from a young age, said representing the country has always been a dream he cherishes.
He reaffirmed his commitment to the Super Eagles, saying his passion for the national team goes beyond personal considerations or club career.
“I have been in the Super Eagles for a long time, starting for the U12 upwards. I am not coming to the national team because of anything but the love for the game and passion,” Iheanacho said.
The experienced forward added that playing for Nigeria remains a source of pride, having fulfilled a dream he shared with many young footballers growing up.
“It is the dream of anyone to play in the Super Eagles, and I have lived that dream for a long time.”
Iheanacho also made it clear that he would accept a national team invitation regardless of the circumstances, insisting that representing Nigeria remains an honour.
“If it is 5v5 or any call-up from the nation, I will surely obey as long as I receive a call-up. I’m really happy to be here.”
The forward also defended the quality of the Turkish league, where he currently plays, against perceptions that it’s not competitive.
The former Manchester City player defends players choices of choosing particular clubs, but the demands and competitive nature of football remain similar across different leagues.
“Individual as a player, you have a reason to go to any club you are. For me, football is the same everywhere. Some are in Turkey, in the division I play, it is a good league, and it is not easy as people think. My teammates can testify.”
