By Saheed Afolabi
Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Bukola Olopade is optimistic on the impacts that the 2026 Dakar Olympics Youth Games will have on young athletes from Nigeria.
The Games, scheduled to hold from October 31 to November 13, will bring together about 2,700 athletes aged 17 and under from across the world, with Nigeria set to use the platform to showcase some of its promising young talents.
Olopade, said the Dakar Games would provide an important platform for Nigeria to strengthen its youth development pathway and prepare a new generation of athletes for future Olympic and global competitions.
According to Olopade, the NSC is committed to creating opportunities for emerging talents to gain the experience required to compete successfully at the highest level.
The Dakar 2026 programme will feature 25 competitive sports, alongside 10 engagement sports designed to broaden participation and provide young athletes with opportunities to interact and experience different aspects of the Games beyond the main competition.
Competition will be spread across three host zones in Senegal, Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly with athletes and officials expected to converge on the West African country for two weeks.
With only a month remaining before the opening of the Games, attention will now shift to the athletes who will represent Nigeria and the preparations required to ensure they arrive in Dakar in the best possible condition.
Olopade said the commission focus is not only on Nigeria’s performance in Dakar but also on ensuring that participation in major youth competitions helps build a sustainable pipeline of athletes capable of representing the country at future Olympic Games and other international championships.
Dakar 2026 will equally mark a landmark moment for African sport, as Senegal becomes the first African country to host an Olympic sport event, giving the continent an opportunity to showcase its capacity to stage a major global youth competition.
