Applications are now open for the African Development Bank (AfDB) 2027 Internship Programme – Session 1.

This opportunity gives eligible students and recent master’s graduates a chance to gain professional experience at one of Africa’s leading development institutions.

The programme is scheduled to commence in January 2027 and will run for between three and six months. Selected interns may be placed at the Bank’s headquarters in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, regional and country offices, or work remotely, depending on the requirements of their respective hiring units.

The AfDB says the internship is designed to provide participants with practical experience in an international multilateral environment while exposing them to the Bank’s development activities. The programme is competitive, and selection is based on the Bank’s business needs.

Who Can Apply?

The internship is open to nationals of African Development Bank member countries who meet the following requirements:

  • Applicants must be 30 years old or younger by December 31, 2026.
  • Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree and be currently enrolled in a master’s degree programme at a recognised institution, or have obtained a master’s degree within one year of applying.
  • Applicants must provide proof of enrolment or their master’s degree certificate.
  • Candidates must be able to communicate effectively in English or French, with a working knowledge of the other language.
  • Applicants should be able to use standard Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access.
  • Female candidates are particularly encouraged to apply.

Areas of Study

The programme is open to candidates from disciplines aligned with the Bank’s operations and strategic priorities.

These include power, energy, climate and green growth; agriculture; human and social development; private sector, infrastructure and industrialisation; economics and statistics; governance and knowledge management; finance; law; human resources; information technology; procurement; audit; evaluation; communications and public relations; gender; and environmental and social assessment, among other relevant fields.

What the Internship Offers

Eligible interns will receive a monthly stipend and medical insurance coverage paid for by the Bank during the internship period. However, interns undertaking on-site placements are responsible for their travel and personal upkeep.

The Bank may also assist selected interns with entry and residence visa processes where applicable.

The AfDB notes that participation in the internship should not be considered a guarantee of future employment with the institution.

How to Apply

Interested candidates must complete the application online through the African Development Bank’s recruitment portal.

Applicants should submit a complete application and attach a comprehensive CV along with the required supporting documents. External applicants should select the “External Candidate” application option on the vacancy page.
