Amusan Reflects Tough Season After Winning Silver In Budapest

Nigeria sprinter, Tobi Amusan has opened up about her initial struggles this season after clinching the silver medal in the 100m hurdles at the 2025 World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest on Friday.
Amusan clocking 12.34 seconds as she finished behind American Olympic champion Masai Russell, who took gold in 12.22 seconds. Netherlands Nadine Visser claimed bronze in 12.39 seconds. Amusan’s second-place finish earned her a $75,000 prize money and gave Nigeria its first major result at the championship.
Mirroring on a turbulent season, Amusan recalled her high and low moments and credited God for her return to form.
“This year has been upside down, but I must still give thanks to God because He knows everything. He can see what I cannot see,” she said.
The 29-year-old explained her target coming into the race and how she had pressured herself in achieving it despite body conditioning.
“I came into this race saying that I must give it my all because the body is not a robot. It shuts down sometimes.”
The former World record holder came into the championship with a determined mindset while she hopes to come out stronger next year.
“For this tournament, I said no matter what it takes, I just have to give it my all. I do not know what is going to happen next year, but it’s going to be bloody. Just take whatever you see.”
The result marks another global podium finish for Amusan in a season that has seen her lose her long-standing world record to Russell and navigate minor setbacks. She advanced to the final after running 12.49 seconds in her semi-final.
