LAWMA Teams Clear Strategic Spots Across Lagos, Boost Public Health

The Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) Intervention Team has continued its systematic cleanup operations across key transport and commercial corridors in Lagos State. The exercise covered Oye Roundabout, Daleko Bridge, Odo-Olowu Bus Stop, Lord’s Chosen Junction, Ijesha Bus Stop and Walkway, Cele Okota Junction, Mile 2, and adjoining points within the axis.
Accumulated solid waste and debris were evacuated, drainage channels cleared, and walkways restored. These actions form part of the Authority’s ongoing programme to maintain environmental standards and protect public health.
Prior to intervention, the presence of hazardous refuse in these high-traffic areas created conditions favourable to disease transmission. Decomposing waste generated foul odours, attracted rodents and insects, and contaminated surface water and soil. Such environments elevate the risk of vector-borne and sanitation-related illnesses, including malaria, cholera, typhoid and diarrhoeal diseases, particularly among residents, traders and daily commuters who spend extended periods in these locations.
In addition, the accumulation of untreated waste contributed to localised air pollution. Organic decay releases airborne particulate matter, ammonia and other irritant gases, while wind-blown dust from refuse heaps further degrades air quality. Prolonged exposure places passersby and nearby communities at increased risk of respiratory irritation, aggravated asthma, allergic reactions and other air-quality-related health effects.
By removing the refuse and restoring cleaner conditions, the intervention directly reduces these environmental health hazards. Clearer walkways and reduced waste volumes lower opportunities for vector breeding, diminish odour and particulate emissions, and improve overall air quality in the immediate vicinity. The result is a measurable contribution to safer public spaces and reduced health risks for both the resident community and transient users of these corridors.
