I Show My Grandma a New Certificate When She Asks About Husband – DJ Cuppy

Nigerian disc jockey and entrepreneur Florence Otedola, popularly known as DJ Cuppy, has revealed that she receives marriage proposals almost every day but has developed an unusual way of avoiding pressure to settle down.

Speaking in an interview with Marie Claire published on Thursday, Cuppy said her growing collection of academic qualifications has become a convenient response whenever her grandmother asks when she plans to get married.

“I call it avoidance of marriage. Every time my grandma asks, ‘Where’s your husband?’, I show her a new certificate,” she said.

Cuppy said the marriage proposals come from more than just her fans, adding that people around her often try to find a partner for her even when she has not requested their help.

“I get marriage proposals every day. And I’m not even talking about fans. Everyone is apparently trying to help me when I have not asked to be helped,” she said.

Beyond using education as an escape from marriage conversations, Cuppy said her academic journey reflects her desire to gain a deeper understanding of the industries in which she operates.

She has studied at New York University, the University of Oxford and King’s College London and said she is already considering pursuing another qualification.

According to the DJ, her interest in education is driven by a desire to understand the systems and processes behind the entertainment industry rather than simply participating in it.

“With entertainment, I have never just wanted to participate. I want to understand who controls what and learn as much about their processes as possible,” she said.

Cuppy also spoke about her relationship with her father, billionaire businessman Femi Otedola, recalling an airport encounter that made her realise how far her own public profile had grown.

She said her father was once recognised by someone who referred to him as “Cuppy’s dad”, rather than identifying him by his own name.

“It made me feel good because normally, I’m Femi’s daughter, but on that day, to that person, he was my dad,” she said.

The entertainer also discussed her philanthropic activities, distinguishing between charity and philanthropy.

According to her, charity involves giving to people in need, while philanthropy focuses on creating lasting solutions and long-term impact.

For now, Cuppy appears more focused on her career, education and philanthropic interests, even as marriage proposals continue to come her way.
