Ikorodu-Born Ogunjimi Emerges African Accountants-General Chairman
An Ikorodu-born public servant, Dr Shamseldeen Babatunde Ogunjimi, has emerged as the new Chairman of the African Association of Accountant-Generals (AAAG).
Ogunjimi, who serves as Nigeria’s Accountant-General of the Federation, secured the position after defeating candidates from Tanzania and The Gambia at the association’s Annual General Meeting held in the Kingdom of Eswatini.
The Nigerian candidate won with 83 per cent of the total votes cast, while Tanzania received 11 per cent and The Gambia secured six per cent.
His emergence places a Nigerian at the helm of a continental body responsible for promoting cooperation, knowledge-sharing and best practices among Accountant-Generals across Africa.
For Ikorodu, where Ogunjimi was born, the development represents another moment of pride as one of its own assumes a major continental responsibility.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Ogunjimi on his election, describing the achievement as a source of immense pride for Nigeria.
In a statement, the President said Ogunjimi’s emergence was a testament to Nigeria’s efforts to promote transparency, accountability and excellence in public finance administration.
President Tinubu expressed confidence that the new AAAG Chairman would use his position to deepen collaboration among member states, promote the exchange of best practices and strengthen institutional capacity across the continent.
He also expressed optimism that Ogunjimi’s leadership would contribute to reforms aimed at improving prudent financial management across Africa.
The President wished the Accountant-General a successful tenure and assured him of the Federal Government’s support as he assumes the continental responsibility.
For Ogunjimi, the new role comes at a time when African countries continue to face growing demands for stronger public financial management, transparency and accountability.
His election is therefore expected to place Nigeria at the centre of continental conversations on how governments manage public resources and strengthen financial systems.
The achievement also adds to the growing list of Nigerians from Ikorodu who have attained prominent positions in public service and national affairs.
